The Tigers trade Steve Kemp to the White Sox for Chet Lemon. In Detroit, the deal goes over like a fart in church.

The Red Sox outbid the Phillies and sign Tony Pena as a free agent. It is the first time Boston was jumped into the free-agent pool since the Carter Administration.

For the first time in history, the American League Gold Glove team is exactly the same as the previous season’s team. Winners include Eddie Murray, Lou Whitaker, Buddy Bell, Alan Trammell, Dwight Evans, Dave Winfield, and Dwayne Murphy.

Vince Coleman receives all 24 first-place ROY votes despite Reds pitcher Tom Browning going 20-9. Browning also threw 261.1 innings. Guessing the next time a rookie throws that many innings will be never. Coleman hits .267 and steals 110 bases for the N.L. Champion Cardinals.

Joe Morgan and Jim Palmer highlight the newcomers to the Hall of Fame ballot. Both are elected in their first year of eligibility.
