Happy ’80s Birthday to Steve Yeager, who appeared in the October 1982 edition of Playgirl and in Major League. In addition, he won a ring with the Dodgers in 1981.

Tommy Dunbar was born OTD in 1959. He spent 12 years in the minor leagues, and parts of three seasons with the Rangers in the big leagues before becoming a coach. Tom passed away in 2011.

Happy ‘80s Birthday to Randy Velarde, who made his debut with the Yankees in 1987 and spent 16 years in the bigs. He also turned an unassisted triple play in 2000.

Happy ‘80s Birthday to Bob Malloy, who appeared in three games for the Rangers and Expos between 1987 and 1990.

Happy ‘80s Birthday to Ben McDonald, who was the overall #1 pick of the 1989 draft and spent nine years in the bigs with the Orioles and Brewers, winning 78 games.

The Angels send Dennis Rasmussen to the Yankees to complete the deal that sent Tommy John to California earlier in the year. He wins 13 games in Triple-A for the Yankees and is part of a deal in 1983 with the Padres that sends John Montefusco to the Yankees.

Cal Ripken Jr. wins the A.L. Rookie of the Year Award. In his first full season, Cal hits .264 with 28 homers and 93 RBI. He wins the MVP the following season. Twins owner Calvin Griffith calls the decision “a travesty” and thinks that Kent Hrbek should have won.

Todd Worrell wins the 1986 Rookie of the Year Award after posting a 2.08 E.R.A. and a league-leading 36 saves.

The Twins remove the interim tag from Tom Kelly and name him manager. This works out well for the Twins and their fans.

The Angels announce that they will not offer Reggie Jackson a contract for 1987.

He returns to Oakland and finishes his career with the A’s.
