The Giants sign Kevin Bass to a three-year, $5.25 million free-agent deal. Bass was coming off a 1989 campaign in which he missed ten weeks with a broken leg. Knee problems forced him to miss three months in 1990.

The Cubs announce that Harry Caray will move north and begin broadcasting Cubs games in 1982 after calling White Sox games since 1971.

New York city files a lawsuit to keep the Yankees from playing some 1983 “home” games in Denver, including their home opener. George Steinbrenner initiated the situation when he said he would play games in Denver because construction at Yankee Stadium would leave the field in bad condition.

Cal Ripken Jr wins the AL MVP award. He becomes the first player ever to win the ROY and MVP in consecutive seasons.

Gregg Jeffries is named Minor-League Player of the Year for the second year in a row by Baseball America. Jeffries hit .367 with 20 homers and 101 RBI for the Double-A Jackson Mets.

Jose Canseco becomes the first unanimous MVP winner in the A.L. since Reggie in 1973.
