Ryne Sandberg and Dale Murphy each homer as the U.S. defeats Japan 6-3 in the first of a seven-game goodwill series.

Chris Sabo is named the N.L. Rookie of the Year in a tight race against Chicago’s Mark Grace. 

Sabo told the Cincinnati Enquirer he thought Grace should have won.

The Red Sox place Tony Perez on waivers for the purpose of giving him in unconditional release. He eventually signs with the Phillies, where he is reunited with Joe Morgan and Pete Rose and helps Philadelphia reach the World Series in 1983.

The Dodgers release Joe Beckwith and his career is over. 

He finishes with 18 wins and seven saves over seven seasons.

The Expos release Jim Wohlford and his career is over. 

He plays 15 years in the big leagues, which is a fine career.

The Rangers name Doug Rader as their new manager. He takes over for interim skipper Darrell Johnson, who took over after Don Zimmer was fired.
