Happy ’80s Birthday to Bill Doran, who was a very solid second baseman for the Astros and Reds and was a big late-season acquisition for Cincinnati in their 1990 World Series run. He hit .373 down the stretch for the Reds.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Phormer Phillies SS Steve Jeltz, whose 367 lifetime hits are the most among players born in France.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Ed Olwine, who pitched for the Braves from 1986-88. 

Happy ’80s Birthday to Duane Ward, who made his debut for the Braves in 1986 and led the AL in saves in 1993.

He returns to Chicago and pitches in five games before being released.

Joe Cowley sets a major league record by striking out the first seven Rangers hitters he faces.

The bad news is that he gives up six runs in 4 1/3 innings and loses, 6 – 3.

Joe Carter goes 4-5 with 3 dingers and 5 RBI in a 12-8 loss to the Red Sox.

Dwight Evans goes 3-4 and drives in 6 for Boston.

Mike Young hits two extra-inning dingers against the Angels and Baltimore wins the game 8-7.

The Dodgers beat the Mets 4-3 in L.A. when home plate umpire Bob Davidson calls a balk on Roger McDowell in the top of the 12th inning.

The Padres fire Larry Bowa after he goes 81-127 over parts of two seasons. 

Injuries

5/28/81

Johnny Bench breaks his ankle while sliding into second base and misses three months.

Bench was hitting .343 at the time of the injury. He hits .266 with 6 homers after his return. 

5/28/83

Dennis Leonard tears his patella tendon while delivering a pitch to Cal Ripken Jr. and misses the rest of the 1983 season, all of 1984 and most of 1985. He undergoes four surgeries and throws a three-hit shutout in his first start of 1986. 

Transactions

The Giants release Greg Minton. 

He signs with the Angels a few days later and pitches for them through 1990.
