Happy ’80s Birthday to Oakland pitcher Mike Norris who had a phenomenal year in 1980. Norris went 22-9, 2.53 with 24 complete games and finished 2nd in the CY Young balloting to Baltimore’s Steve Stone.

Ivan Calderon was born on this day in 1962. He enjoyed his best season in 1987 when he hit .293 with 28 homers with the White Sox. He was killed in a bar in Puerto Rico in 2003.

Phormer Phillies broadcaster and Philadelphia icon Rich Ashburn was born on this day in 1927. Whitey delivered one of the biggest throws in Phillies history in 1950 and worked on Phillies broadcasts from 1963 through his death in 1997. 

Happy ’80s Birthday to Tim Corcoran, who hit .341 off the bench for the Phillies in 1984. That’s pretty solid.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Chuck Jackson, who spent parts of three seasons in the bigs with Houston and Texas.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Jeff Hamilton, a 29th-round draft pick who made his debut with the Dodgers in 1986 and won a ring with them in 1988.

The Royals trade Keith Creel to the Indians for a PTBNL. Cleveland sends Dwight Taylor to KC to complete the deal. Creel goes 2-5 in 62 innings for Cleveland in 1985.

The Mariners acquire Rod Scurry from the Giants for a PTBNL. Seattle sends Donnell Nixon to SF to complete the deal.

With Dave Winfield nursing a back injury, the Yankees send Joel Skinner and Turner Ward to Cleveland for Mel Hall.

3/19/83

The Angels sign Bob Lacey as a free agent. He appears in 8 games at the major league level and signs with the Giants for 1984, his final major league season.

Earl Weaver pulls his team off the field and forfeits after 6 innings in a game against the Royals. Weaver was upset that he didn’t have a list of Royals substitutions. The move earns him a three-day suspension

3/19/85

The Giants release Roy Howell. He signs with the Phillies and spends the year in Triple-A before retiring.

3/19/86

The Red Sox release Ed Jurak. He spends the year in independent ball, then signs with Texas in 1987.

3/19/88

The Dodgers release Ron Davis. He splits the year between the Giants Triple-A team and Japan and signs with the Yankees for 1989 where he spends the season in the minor leagues.

Injuries

3/19/88

A Jose Lind line drive tips off Mario Soto’s glove and hits him square in the forehead, causing an ugly welt. Soto is removed as a precautionary measure but still makes his Opening Day start.

3/19/89

Dave Winfield leaves Yankees camp with a back injury and states he may need to have surgery. That worst-cast scenario plays out and Winfield misses the entire season.
