Steve Howe 1981 baseball card

1980 NL Rookie of the Year Steve Howe was born OTD in 1958. Howe won 7 games and saved 17 more in his rookie season, but drug problems derailed a promising career. He was killed in an automobile accident in 2006.

John Cangelosi 1986 Donruss Baseball Card

Happy ’80s Birthday to John Cangelosi, who stole 50 bags for the White Sox as a rookie in 1986, back when stolen bases were a thing, and won a ring with the Marlins in 1997. Remember stolen bases? They were kinda cool.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Mike Birkbeck, who spent parts of six years in the big leagues with the Brewers and Mets and has been a coach at Kent State since 2004.

He bounces around the minor leagues until 1989 when he makes his big league debut with the Astros in 1989. His son, Robinson, does a bit better.

He spends the year in Triple-A and moves on to play for the Angels in 1989 before wrapping up his career with the Dodgers.

Injuries

Rollie Fingers Diamond King

Brewers reliever Rollie Fingers throws for the first time in Spring Training and reports no pain. 

“As far as I’m concerned, I’m doing better than I thought I would,” he tells the media after missing the final month of 1982 and the postseason with an elbow injury. 

Unfortunately, the pain returns and he winds up missing the entire 1983 season as well.
