6/30/83

Bob Meacham plays one inning on defense against the Orioles in his big league debut.

He’d spend six seasons with the Yankees and often incur the wrath of George Steinbrenner.

Mickey Tettleton makes his big league debut as a defensive replacement.

He’d spend 14 years in the majors and hit 245 homers.

6/30/86

Bo Jackson makes his professional baseball debut. He goes 1-4 with an RBI single. An umpire stopped the game to give Bo the baseball from his first hit and he turned it down saying, “The one I will save will be my first hit after I get to the Royals.”

David Wells 1987

6/30/87

A somewhat eccentric lefty makes his big league debut for the Blue Jays. He gets knocked around a bit, but finishes his career with 239 wins, a perfect game, and two rings.

Big Days

Keith Moreland 1980 Burger King

6/30/80
Keith Moreland’s Grand Slam is part of a 7-run 4th inning as the Phillies beat the Expos in Montreal.
The win cuts the Expos lead in the NL East to 1.5 games over Philadelphia.

Joe Rudi 1980 Topps

6/30/80

Joe Rudi and Bobby Grich record back-to-back pinch hit singles in the 9th inning off Ed Farmer as the Angels beat the White Sox 10-6.

The Sox committing 5 errors didn’t help their cause either.

Nine different Minnesota Twins players record at least one hit as the Twins beat up on the Royals 12-3.

1979 Rookie of the Year John Castino goes 4-5 with a solo homer and 5 RBI.

Lance Junker

6/30/83

Lance Junker of the Redwood Pioneers (Angels) hits two grand slams in the 9th inning of a 16-5 win over the Reno Padres.

The last-minute deal occurs when the clocks are unplugged in the statehouse until the necessary votes were secured.

Transactions

Todd Cruz 1983

6/30/83

The Orioles purchase Todd Cruz from the Mariners.

Cruz comes to Baltimore and wins a ring so it worked out quite well for him.

Jim Slaton 1986

The Angels release Jim Slaton.

He finishes the year in Detroit and his 16-year career is over.

6/30/86

He finishes with three All-Star appearances and 208 career homers. Dude hit bombs.

We lost Bobby Castillo OTD in 2014.

Castillo pitched in the big leagues for nine years and is credited with teaching Fernando Valenzuela how to throw a screwball.
