Happy ’80s Birthday to Nelson Simmons, a switch-hitter who was the first Tiger to homer from both sides of the plate. 

Roy Johnson was born OTD in 1959.

He was a legit prospect who had the misfortune of trying to break into an Expos outfield that included Tim Raines, Andre Dawson, Warren Cromartie, and Terry Francona.

He passed away in 2009 from a heart attack. 

Happy ’80s Birthday to Jackie Gutierrez, who spent six years in the big leagues with the Red Sox, Orioles, and Phillies.

The Orioles trade a PTBNL and Roy Lee Jackson to the Padres for Alan Wiggins.  Baltimore sends Rich Caldwell to San Diego to complete the trade.

The Dodgers sign Mario Soto as a free agent. He pitches in one game in Single-A and he’s done.

Jeff Lahti allows one run in two innings in his big league debut. 

He wins five games and a ring as a rookie for the Cardinals.

Greg Olson goes 0 for 1 as a pinch-hitter in his big league debut for the Twins. 

He signs with the Braves the following year and spends four years in Atlanta.

Jerry Reuss throws the only no-hitter of the 1980 season.

Rick Camp leads a quartet of Braves pitchers who throw 14 shutout innings in a 2-0 win over the Reds at Riverfront Stadium.

Cincinnati’s Mario Soto throws 10 scoreless innings and gets a no-decision.

The Giants steal 6 bases in six attempts against Reds catcher Brad Gulden in a 14-9 win at The Stick.

Jeffrey Leonard hits for the cycle and drives in three but the Giants lose to the Reds 7-6.

He’s the first Giants player to hit for the cycle since Dave Kingman in 1972.

Robby Thompson is thrown out stealing four times in one game against the Reds.

6/27/87

Mark McGwire hits three homers and drives in five as the A’s beat the Indians, 13-3.

McGwire finishes the season with a rookie record 49 dingers.

6/27/89

Blue Jays pitchers serve up 15 walks in a 16-6 loss to the Orioles.

Mike Flanagan starts the game and is knocked out in the 3rd. He’s followed by Frank Wills and DeWayne Buice, who walk 11 batters in five-and-a-third innings.

6/27/87

Darrell Evans homers for his 2,000th career hit in a 4-2 loss to the Orioles.

He finishes his career with 2,223 hits and 414 homers.

6/27/89

The Padres beat the Dodgers 5-3 in 17 innings in a game that features 29 total hits and 32 total strikeouts.

Kirk Gibson goes 0 for 8 with 4 punchouts. Ouch
