Happy ’80s Birthday to the speedy Willie Wilson, who stole more than 600 bases in his career and turned in his best season in 1980, leading the Major Leagues in at-bats, hits, runs, and triples.

George Brett hit .390 in 1980 and he didn’t even lead his own team in hits. Willie had 230.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Guy Hoffman, who pitched in six big league seasons over ten years for the Reds, Cubs, White Sox, and Rangers. 

Marty Springstead was born OTD in 1937.

He called games from 1966 through 1985 became the youngest crew chief in World Series history in 1973. He retired from on-field duty and became Executive Director of Umpires in 1986. 

He passed away in 2012.

Reds third baseman Wade Rowdon goes 5 for 5 with three RBI against the Mets, including three doubles off Dwight Gooden.

Rowden had 36 hits in his career.

Murph’s consecutive-game streak ends at 740 games when he sits out Atlanta’s 7-3 win over the Phillies.

He hadn’t missed a game since September 25, 1981.

Mike Schmidt’s homer against the Braves moves him past Eddie Mathews and Ernie Banks and into sole possession of 10th place on the all-time list with 513.

 

7/9/88

Nolan Ryan becomes the 7th player to win at least 100 games for two different teams when the Astros beat the Mets 6-3. Ryan also won 138 games for the Angels.

7/9/88

Chris Speier hits for the cycle and Ernest Riles hits the 10,000th home run in Giants history to lead San Francisco to a 21 – 2 rout of the Cardinals. 

Speier becomes just the 4th player in history to cycle for two different teams.
