Happy ’80s Birthday to Lee Elia, who has opinions about Cubs fans.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Terry Pendleton, who won the N.L. MVP Award in 1991 and finished 2nd in 1992.

He also looked resplendent in powder blue.

Norm Sherry was born OTD in 1931.

Sherry spent five years in the big leagues as a player and also served as a manager and coach. He passed away in 2021. 

Frank Jobe was born OTD in 1925. He passed away in 2014.

The Brewers sign Gorman Thomas as a free agent and everything is right with the world again.

The glorious 12-day Cincinnati Reds Ivan DeJesus era begins. 

Topps didn’t make a Reds card for him that season so, in true Topps airbrush spirit, I made one my damn self.

The Red Sox sign Larry Parrish as a free agent. 

He hits .259 with seven homers in 52 games and he’s done. The man could hit.

Ken Caminiti goes 2 for 3 with a dinger off Kevin Gross in his big league debut. 

He spent 15 years in the big leagues and win the N.L. MVP Award in 1996. 

He passed away in 2004.

The California Supreme Court rules that Ted Giannoulas, AKA the San Diego Chicken, can appear publicly in chicken suits as long as they don’t bear the call letters of San Diego’s KGB radio station. The station had fired Giannoulas when he began appearing publicly in the suit without permission.

Every player in the Indians lineup gets at least one hit as the Tribe rolls over the Royals 17-3.

Ron Hassey paces Cleveland with a 4-5 night, including a home runs. Gorman Thomas, Manny Trillo, and Pat Tabler also homer for the Indians.

LaMarr Hoyt allows one unearned run in three innings to earn MVP honors as the National League beats the American League, 6 – 1, at Minnesota’s Metrodome in the All-Star Game

7/16/87

Don Mattingly goes 2 for 5 with two homers and 7 RBI.

It’s the 6th straight game in which he’s hit at least one homer and he’s hitting .464 with 19 RBI during the streak.

The Yankees purchase Larry Milbourne from the Phillies. 

He finishes the season in New York and finishes his career in 1984 with Seattle.

The Yankees purchase Neil Allen from the Cardinals. 

He goes 1-0 down the stretch and gets traded to the White Sox, who later release him and he’s picked up by… the Yankees. 

Deaths

Former umpire Rick Reed passed away OTD in 2020.

Reed called games in the big leagues from 1979 through 2009.
