The Reds trade Tracy Jones and Pat Pacillo to the Expos for Jeff Reed, Randy St. Claire, and Herm Winningham. 

Both Reed and Winningham are key players for the 1990 Reds World Series team.

The Reds sign Jim Wohlford as a free agent.

Wohlford plays in 33 games for the Nashville Sounds and his career is over.

The Mets sign Bob McClure as a free agent. He goes 1-0 for New York, then goes to California the following season and goes 6-1.

Bob Ojeda goes 5.2 innings in his big league debut against the Tigers.

He finishes 3rd in the A.L. Rookie of the Year balloting the following season.

Bill Schroeder goes 1 for 5 against the Rangers in his big league debut. 

He spends eight years in the major leagues with the Brewers and Angels.

Dave Concepcion’s 2nd-inning two-run homer off Red Sox starter Dennis Eckersley paces the N.L. to a 4-1 win in the All-Star Game in Montreal.

It’s the first All-Star game played outside the United States, and the 11th straight win for the National League.

Jason Thompson’s 18th inning single scores Lee Mazzilli 18th inning to give the Pirates a 4-3 win over the Giants.

In the definition of “crafty pitching” WhiteSox starter Britt Burns gives up 8 runs in a complete-game win.

Orioles LF Gary Roenicke goes 2-4 with two homers and 6 RBI against the White Sox but it’s not enough as Chicago still wins 10-8.

The Angels get three pinch hits in the bottom of the 9th to beat the Blue Jays, 4 – 3. Darrell Miller, Mike Brown, and Bob Boone all deliver singles to give Mike Witt the complete-game win.

Jack Morris shuts out the Royals and strikes out 12 in a 5-0 win.

7/13/89

Rough day for Bob Knepper, who sees his E.R.A. jump by more than a half a run after walking 5 and allowing 10 runs on 11 hits in 4.1 innings against the Phillies.

That’s gonna leave a mark.

The Red Sox part ways with manager John McNamara and replace him with Joe Morgan.

Boston wins 12 straight after the switch and wins the A.L. East.

Deaths

George Steinbrenner passed away on this day in 2010. 

He purchased the Yankees in 1973 and he loved calzones.
