Happy ’80s Birthday to Brian Holman, who came up with the Expos in 1988 and went to Seattle in the Randy Johnson trade. He won 37 games over four seasons. He also came within one out of throwing a perfect game in 1990. His career was cut short due to arm problems.

Vern Ruhle baseball card

Vern Ruhle was born on this day in 1951. Ruhle stepped up for the Astros in 1980 when J.R. Richard went down, going 6-2 with a 1.91 ERA to help Houston reach the postseason for the first time in their history. He passed away in 2007.

In a rare crosstown deal, The Cubs trade Scott Fletcher, Randy Martz, Pat Tabler, and Dick Tidrow to the White Sox for Warren Brusstar and Steve Trout. 

The White Sox then flip Tabler to Cleveland for Jerry Dybzinski.

Dave Stewart announces that he has agreed to a two-year contract worth $2 million with the Yomyuri Giants in the Japanese League. The deal falls through and he re-signs with the Phillies, who release him in May.

The Twins avoid arbitration by signing Kirby Puckett to a one-year deal worth $2 million. He becomes the fastest player in terms of service time (4 years, 147 days) to earn $2 million per year.
