Stretch was born on this day, and we miss him. He made his debut in 1959, retired mid-season in 1980 and went straight to Cooperstown.

Dwight Gooden’s agent says his client may sit out the season if the Mets don’t renegotiate his contract. The Mets eventually bump him up from the $40,000 he earned in 1984 to $450,000 in 1985 and he responds by going 24-4, striking out 268 hitters, posting a 1.53 E.R.A., and winning the Cy Young Award.

The Braves announce the Rufino Linares will miss most of the season after breaking his ankle in the Dominican Winter League. He plays in 29 games for the Triple-A Richmond Braves and splits 1984 between Triple-A and the big leagues.

Bob Horner has the cast removed from his broken wrist. He underwent surgery to insert a screw and the operation is a success.
The Braves thought he might miss the entire season, but he is ready on Opening Day and hits .267 with 27 homers in 1985.
