John Marzano was born OTD in 1963. He made his debut for the Red Sox in 1987 and, as a backup catcher, earned the nickname, “Johnny NFL,” because, like the NFL he only played on Sundays. John passed away in 2008 after an accident. He was just 45 years old.

The Oakland A’s sign Thad Bosley as a free agent. Oakland sells him to the Cubs at the end of spring training and he hits .303 in a primarily bench role over the next four seasons.

The Tigers sign Rod Allen as a free agent. He spends most of the year in Double-A, but he does play in 15 games at the major league level, which is enough to get a ring. Advantage: Rod Allen

The Tigers sign Ken Hill as an amateur free agent. They trade him to the Cardinals in 1986 in a deal that nets the Tigers Mike Heath. Hill makes his big league debut in 1988 and pitches until 2001

The Expos sign Bert Roberge as a free agent. They release him in April and then re-sign him in May. He throws 28 2/3 innings in his final big league season and retires.

The Brewers sign Paul Mirabella as a free agent. He spends the next four years coming out of the pen for Milwaukee and retires.
