Happy ’80s Birthday to one of my childhood idols, Lawrence Robert Bowa. He was 3rd in Rookie of the Year voting in 1970, won two Gold Gloves, was a 5-time All-Star, finished in 3rd place in the 1978 NL MVP voting and he was one of the feistiest dudes you ever saw. You hated him if he wasn’t on your team and loved him if he was. Happy Birthday, Larry!

Happy ’80s Birthday to Mike Parrott, who went 1-16 for the Mariners in 1980 and that wasn’t the worst thing that happened to him on a baseball field that summer. Here is the story

Happy ’80s Birthday to Gary Ward, who had a big year in 1982, hitting 28 HRs and driving in 91 for the Twins. He looked good doing it, too

Happy ’80s Birthday to Bedrock, who won a Cy Young in 1987 with the Phillies and racked up 184 saves over his 14-year career.

Happy ’80s Birthday to the scrappy Tim Foli, who was drafted 1/1 by the Mets in 1968. While he never turned into a superstar, he did play in the bigs for 16 years for the Pirates, Expos, Angels, Giants, and Yankees.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Jeff Schneider, who appeared in 11 games for the Orioles in 1981 and has a very valuable rookie card.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Chuck Baker, who spent parts of three years in the bigs with the Padres and Twins.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Luis Rosado, who played 11 games for the Mets between 1977 and 1980.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Lance Blankenship, who spent six years with the A’s and won a ring in 1989.

12/6/82

The Red Sox trade Carney Lansford to the A’s for Tony Armas and Jeff Newman and turn third base over to some dude named Boggs. Boston got an upgrade in the power department but lost a lot of mustache points.

12/6/83

The Pirates trade Mike Easler to the Red Sox for John Tudor. Tudor goes 12-11 in his lone year in Pittsburgh before going on an amazing run in St. Louis in 1985. Easler joins a powerful Boston lineup and turns in one of his best seasons in 1984, hitting .313 with 27 homers and 91 RBI.

12/6/84

The White Sox trade 1983 AL Cy Young Award winner LaMarr Hoyt and two minor leaguers to the Padres for Tim Lollar, Luis Salazar, Bill Long, and a minor league SS named Ozzie Guillen.

12/6/88

The Montreal Expos trade Jeff Parrett and Floyd Youmans to the Philadelphia Phillies for Kevin Gross.

12/6/88

The Rangers trade Pete O’Brien‚ Oddibe McDowell‚ and Jerry Browne to Cleveland for Julio Franco.

12/6/89

The Indians trade Joe Carter to the Padres for Chris James, Sandy Alomar and Carlos Baerga. Advantage: Tribe

12/6/89

The Mets trade Randy Myers to the Reds for John Franco. Myers is kinda psycho, but he helps the Reds win the World Series in 1990. Franco becomes a New York icon.

12/6/89

The Red Sox sign Jeff Reardon as a free agent. He saves 88 games over three seasons in Boston.

12/6/89

The Padres sign Fred Lynn as a free agent. He only hit .240 but his swing was a sweet as ever.

12/6/89

In need of a left-handed bat off the bench, the Astros sign Bill Gullickson.

12/6/89

The Astros sign Ken Oberkfell as a free agent. He spends two years in Houston and finishes his career with the Angels in 1992.

Transactions

12/6/81

Citing, among other things, the number of SB allowed by the Phillies the previous season, Philadelphia sells Bob Boone to the Angels where he leads the A.L. in caught stealing percentage in 1982. Holding runners matters.

12/6/85

The Phillies release Jerry Koosman, ending his career. Over 19 seasons, Koos had 222 wins, 2,556 strikeouts, 140 CGs, 33 shutouts, a 3.36 ERA, and a ring.
