Happy ’80s Birthday to Zane Smith, who went 15-10 in 1987 and led the N.L. in starts with 36. The Braves dealt him to Montreal in 1989 and they flipped him to the Pirates a year later for Willie Greene, Scott Ruskin and a PTBNL. The PTBNL turned out to be Moises Alou.

Happy ’80s Birthday to The Spaceman, who was born in 1946 and is still pitching.

Happy ’80s Birthday to the pugnacious Ray Knight, who had the unenviable task of taking over at 3rd base for Pete Rose with the Reds and performed admirably, hitting .282 over three seasons and driving in 191 runs. He also scrapped with E.D. at Riverfront in 1986. That was a epic brawl. 

Happy ’80s Birthday to Carl Willis, who spent nine years in the bigs, primarily with the Twins and Reds, and won 22 games while recording 13 saves. He was also a member of the World Champion 1984 Tigers.

John Milner was born on this day in 1949. John spent 12 seasons in the bigs with the Mets, Pirates, & Expos and tied a MLB record in 1974 when he came to the plate 12 times in a 25-inning game with the Cardinals. He passed away in 2000 after battling lung cancer,

Aurelio Rodriguez was born on this day in 1947. He spent 17 seasons in the bigs with seven different teams and won a Gold Glove with the Tigers in 1976.

The Dodgers trade Jorge Orta to the Mets for Pat Zachry. The Mets flip Orta to the Blue Jays in spring training of 1983 while Zachry goes 11-7 over tqo years in L.A. before finishing his career with the Phillies.

The Rangers sign Larry Biittner as a free agent. He hits .276 in 66 games and retires after the 1983 season.

12/28/83

Warren Cromartie signs three-year contract to play for the Yomiuri Giants in Japan. He would spend seven seasons there before returning in 1991 to play one year with the Royals.

12/28/87

The Cleveland Indians sign Ron Washington as a free agent. He spends one year in Cleveland and finishes his playing career in 1989 with Houston.
