He spent 15 years in the big leagues, was an All-Star, won a Silver Slugger, and finished 3rd in the A.L. MVP balloting in 1982 with the Angels.

The White Sox release Neil Allen. He signs with the Yankees the following week and pitches until 1990.
Managerial Changes

The Cardinals promote manager Whitey Herzog to General Manager, filling the void left by the dismissal of John Claiborne earlier in the month. Herzog would return to the dugout as manager in 1981 while retaining his GM duties. Red Schoendienst is named manager for the remainder of the season.
