Happy ’80s Birthday to the criminally underrated Buddy Bell, who spent 18 years in the bigs and won six consecutive Gold Gloves

Happy Birthday to Mike Maddux, who spent 15 years in a bigs as a player and is one of the most respected pitching coaches in the game.

Happy Birthday to Pat Kelly, who played in three games for the 1980 Blue Jays and collected two hits.

Happy Birthday to Mike Edwards, who spent four years in the bigs with Oakland and Pittsburgh from 1977 through 1980.

Happy Birthday to Marshall Edwards, Mike’s twin brother, who spent three years with the Brewers and made a huge defensive play in the 1982 ALCS against the Angels.

The Braves trade Ken Oberkfell and cash to the Pirates for a BTBNL. Pittsburgh sends Tommy Gregg to Atlanta to complete the deal.

Mike Smithson throws a CG  for the Rangers in his big league debut but loses 3-1. He wins 53 games over the next four seasons and 76 over the course of his career.

Steve Carlton beats the Dodgers 4-3 to earn his 20th win of the season. It’s the 5th time in his career he’d win at least 20. He’d do it again in 1982.

8/27/82

Rickey steals four bags against the Brewers and passes Lou Brock to set the single season stolen base record. He ends the game with 122 and finished the season with 130.

8/27/84

Dwight Gooden strikes out 14 in a 5-2 win over the Dodgers. It’s the 11th time in his rookie season that he records double-digit strikeouts. He continues to dominate in September.

8/27/85

Jack Howell homers twice and drives in five in a 7-3 Angels win over Baltimore.

8/27/86

Nolan Ryan beats the Cubs 7-1 for his 250th career win. He’d finish with 324.

8/27/88

Mark Gubicza punches out 14 in a CG Royals win over the Twins. He’d win 20 and finish with 183 strikeouts while finishing 3rd in the Cy Young balloting.

8/27/88

Tommy Lasorda wins the 1,000th game of his managerial career. Two months later he wins his 2nd World Series title. All in all, not a bad year.

Transactions

8/27/81

The Reds release Bill Bonham. He re-signs with them in 1982 and appears in one game in Triple-A before retiring.

Managerial Changes

8/27/87

The Royals fire Billy Gardner and replace him with John Wathan, who was managing their Triple-A team. Wathan stays on in KC until 1991. Hal McRae was offered the job but turned it down.

Injuries

8/27/88

Darren Daulton breaks his hand punching the clubhouse wall and misses the rest of the season. Clubhouse walls are undefeated.

8/27/88

Jeff Treadway slams into Tom Pagnozzi on a play at the plate. Treadway separates his shoulder and misses the remainder of the season while Pagnozzi misses about a week. Treadway was out.
