Dwight Gooden strikes out 14 in a 5-2 win over the Dodgers. It’s the 11th time in his rookie season that he records double-digit strikeouts. He continues to dominate in September.

Jack Howell homers twice and drives in five in a 7-3 Angels win over Baltimore.

Nolan Ryan beats the Cubs 7-1 for his 250th career win. He’d finish with 324.

Mark Gubicza punches out 14 in a CG Royals win over the Twins. He’d win 20 and finish with 183 strikeouts while finishing 3rd in the Cy Young balloting.

Tommy Lasorda wins the 1,000th game of his managerial career. Two months later he wins his 2nd World Series title. All in all, not a bad year.

The Reds release Bill Bonham. He re-signs with them in 1982 and appears in one game in Triple-A before retiring.

The Royals fire Billy Gardner and replace him with John Wathan, who was managing their Triple-A team. Wathan stays on in KC until 1991. Hal McRae was offered the job but turned it down.
Injuries

Darren Daulton breaks his hand punching the clubhouse wall and misses the rest of the season. Clubhouse walls are undefeated.

Jeff Treadway slams into Tom Pagnozzi on a play at the plate. Treadway separates his shoulder and misses the remainder of the season while Pagnozzi misses about a week. Treadway was out.
