Happy ’80s Birthday to Hall of Famer Greg Maddux, who was an absolute magician on the mound.

In his four Cy Young seasons, Maddux went 75-29 with a 1.98 ERA and a WHIP of 0.95 in 946.2 innings. That’s just ridiculous.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Chris Welsh who does an outstanding job on Reds broadcasts.

You learn things by listening to him.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Pete!

People sometimes have opinions about Pete.

Happy ’80s Birthday to David Justice, who made his debut with the Braves in 1989 and won Rookie of the Year in 1990.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Mark Bomback, who spent four years in the bigs and was the Blue Jays Opening Day starter in 1982.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Casey Parsons, who played in four seasons in the big leagues and hit a pinch-hit slam off of Mark Eichorn. He also managed in the minor leagues for six seasons.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Bobby Sprowl, who spent parts of four seasons in the big leagues and later became a very successful college coach.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Paul Hodgson, a Canadian native who appeared in 20 games for the 1980 Blue Jays.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Jay Aldrich, who won six games over four seasons with the Brewers, Braves, and Orioles.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Greg Myers, who spent 18 years in the big leagues and was Nolan Ryan’s final strikeout victim.

The Giants sign free agent pitcher Goose Gossage.

Goose goes 2-1 with 4 saves for the Giants before being picked up by the Yankees later in the season.

4/14/81

Von Hayes makes his major league debut as a defensive replacement in the 9th inning of the Indians game against Texas.

He’s optioned to Triple-A and doesn’t return until August and hits .257 in 42 games.

4/14/82

Howard Johnson goes 1 for 4 with a single off Toronto’s Jim Clancy in his major league debut.

He finishes his rookie season with a .316 batting average in 54 games.

Heavy snow causes the roof of the Metrodome to collapse and the Twins/Angels game is postponed

Big Days

4/14/81

Fernando Valenzuela runs his record to 2-0 by beating the Giants in San Francisco. Unfortunately for Fernando he gives up a run in the game.

He atones for this by allowing just one more run in his next 45 innings.

4/14/82

Bob Boone’s walk off single off Gene Nelson in the bottom of the 20th inning scores Don Baylor to give the Angels a 4-3 win over the Mariners to finish a suspended game from the day before.

Then the regularly scheduled went extra-innings, too because baseball.

4/14/87

Bo Jackson goes 4 for 4 with 2 homers and drives in 7 in support as the Royals beat the Tigers 10-1.

4/14/83

Ron Kittle goes 2 for 4 with 6 RBI as Chicago beats the Orioles 12-11.

It was freezing cold and the wind was gusting to nearly 50 MPH, but at least the game took nearly 4 hours to play.

4/14/87

The Brewers beat the Orioles 7-4 on the strength of five homers.

Paul Molitor, Jim Gantner, Robin Yount, Rob Deer and Greg Brock all hit solo shots for Milwaukee.

4/14/88

A Lenny Dykstra solo homer is the only run scored in a 1-0 Mets win over the Expos.

Bob Ojeda goes the distance for the win and the two teams combine for four hits in a game that takes 2:17. This game would take 4 hours today.
