Happy ’80s Birthday to Jeff Bittiger, who won four games over four seasons in the big leagues and also went 1 for 3 at the plate with a dinger.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Ed Amelung, who was signed as an undrafted free agent and made it to the big leagues with the Dodgers in 1984.

Joe Cowley allows one run in 3 1/3 innings against the Reds in his big league debut. He’d pitch in the big leagues for five years and throw a no-hitter in 1986.

4/13/86

Kurt Stillwell goes 1 for 4 with a single off Goose Gossage in his big league debut.

Stillwell was viewed as potentially the shortstop of the future for the Reds until the emergence of Barry Larkin. He was dealt to the Royals along with Ted Power in exchange for Danny Jackson after the 1987 season.

4/13/89

Derek Lilliquist allows just one run over 7 1/3 innings to pick up the win against the Padres in his big league debut.

He’d pitch in the big leagues for eight years.

Big Days

4/13/81

The Phillies get their rings.

4/13/83

Led by Glenn Hoffman’s 5 for 6 night, everyone in the Red Sox lineup gets at least one hit as Boston hammers the Royals 18-4 in Kansas City. When the game ended the wind chill was 7 so a good time was had by all in KC.

4/13/83

Down 9-6 with two out in the bottom of the 9th inning, Bo Diaz hits a walk-off slam off Neil Allen to give the Phillies a 10-9 win over the Mets.

4/13/84

21 years to the day after recording his 1st career hit, long-time Expos great Pete Rose records his 4,000th career hit, a double off Jerry Koosman.

4/13/85

Rollie Fingers earns his 217th career American League save, breaking the record previously held by Sparky Lyle.

The save means that Rollie becomes the first pitcher ever to hold the American League save mark as well as the record for the greatest mustache in history at the same time.

4/13/87

Larry Bowa makes his home debut as Padres manager and also earns his first ejection as Padres manager. Bow is a bit feisty.

4/13/87

Down 2-0 in the bottom of the 1st inning, the Padres hit back to back to back homers to open the inning.

Marvell Wynne, Tony Gwynn and John Kruk all homer for the Padres.

Fights

4/13/83

Ken Griffey’s two-run homer gives the Yankees a 4-3 lead over Detroit and chases Jerry Ujdur from the game.

Udjur is relieved by Dave Rozema, who buzzes Dave Winfield with his first pitch. Winny charges the mound and is ejected.

It is Rozema’s third appearance since injuring his knee in a May 1982 brawl that cost him the rest of the season.
