Merv spent 13 seasons in the bigs, primarily as a pinch-hitter and platoon guy for the Orioles and other teams. He enjoyed his best season in 1971 when he hit .318 in 141 games and earned some MVP votes. Merv won wings with the Orioles in 1970 and the Reds in 1975.
